ZAMBIA

Into the wilderness we go...

A river runs through it... One that stirs the imagination of any self-respecting traveller the world over... We're talking about the Zambezi, of course. It's very much the beating heart of Zambia, the breathtakingly beautiful country that took its name from this mighty African waterway.

Zambia is one of those lesser-known but nonetheless phenomenal safari destinations that blow the socks off hardened safari aficionados, reducing them to blubbering, besotted tourists. It's a country of contrasts, of incredible landscapes engraved by the course of legendary rivers and rolling floodplains filled with life in abundance, of fabulous people with a wealth of tribal heritage and just plain awesomeness.

From the rich floodplains of the Lower Zambezi and the open expanses of the Kafue to the tall, riparian forests of the South Luangwa and thundering glory of Victoria Falls, this is wild Africa at its finest. So take our advice and give this gem a chance to shine!

Best Times To Visit

Things To Do

  • Swim on the edge of Victoria Falls (seasonal)

No, we're not joking. During the dry season the Zambezi's flow drops, revealing a small, still pool at the edge of Livingstone Island, on the very lip of the main cataract, that's been carved out of the rock that surrounds and protects it from the main course of the river. It's called Devil's Pool and if you talk nicely to us, we'll arrange for you to swim in it. Right next to the raging torent of the falls. It's not for sissies. So are you up for it?

  • South Luangwa walking safaris

There was a time in Africa when you had to walk from camp to camp if you wanted to go anywhere on safari, braving the heat and dust of the bush in layers of completely impractical clothing. These days, walking safaris are done for pleasure, invariably in fetching shades of khaki lightweight hiking gear, thanks to the South Luangwa National Park and the pioneering walking guides that made walking in the wilderness a thing. Exploring this part of wild Africa on foot is awesome. Just do it.

  • Hot air balloon over the Kafue

We're pretty sure that when the Montgolfier brothers invented the hot air balloon in the late 1700s they never imagined it being used to view the vast expanses of the Kafue National Park's Busanga Plains from the air... Would they be impressed? We think so. As would you be on this amazing airborne African adventure.

  • Fall in love with the Lower Zambezi

There's something special about the Zambezi where it grows wide and lazy beneath the Kariba Dam on its way to Mozambique. This is the Lower Zambezi Valley, the dividing line between two nations (Zambia on the northern bank, Zimbabwe on the southern) and one of the most spectacular wilderness areas in Africa. Canoe it, cruise it, fish it, drive through its shaded groves and fall head over heels in love with it... The options are endless!

  • Discover the magic of Liuwa Plain

Everyone raves about East Africa's great plains and the spectacular great wildebeest migration... But here in Zambia, at Liuwa Plain National Park, the second biggest wildebeest migration rarely hits the headlines. Which is fine, because we like it that way. You get a phenomenal wildlife spectacle with hardly anyone else to share it with and we get to give you the experience of a liftime in a magical place hardly anyone knows about. Winner!
