SOUTH AFRICA

The best of Africa in one, fabulous country

The thing about South Africa is that it just oozes tourism sex appeal. It used to be known as "the world in one country" because of its diversity of landscapes, people, culture and places to visit. These days it's called many things, including the Rainbow Nation, Mzansi and Safrica. We like to think of it as the best Africa has to offer wrapped up in fabulosity and plonked at the southern tip of the continent along with a huge neon sign saying "everyone welcome".

It's impossible to "do" South Africa on a single trip, unless you've got a couple of years to spare, not just because it's a large country but because there's so much to see and do and so many stunning places to visit. There's one of the most beautiful cities in the world, one of the best game reserves on the planet, several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Big Five, the marine Big Five, a vibrant art scene, history aplenty and a good dollop of culture to top it all off.

Do it yourself on a self-drive safari or be taken to the hotspots on an all-inclusive adventure - the choice is yours and ours to deliver to you. Combine the best of everything or opt for a bit-by-bit drip-feed approach. Whichever you choose, we can stake our reputations on you wanting to come back for more! So take a deep breath and plunge into the amazingness that is South Africa...

Best Times To Visit

Things To Do

  • Take a wine tasting tram tour through Franschoek

Yes... You read it right. Board the tram and get transported to wine heaven as you visit some of the best vineyards and wine estates the world has to offer. Hop on and stagger off at will as you sample award-winning vintages and enjoy stunning scenery and great food. You even get wine on the tram itself! It's a veritable viticultural extravaganza!

  • Go wild in the Greater Kruger National Park

One of the most legendary game reserves in the world, the Kruger National Park has expanded its reach thanks to its neighbouring private game reserves that have dropped their fences, creating a conservation giant that's home to incredible wildlife and stunning safari lodges - the Greater Kruger. Learn the art of dressing in 50 shades of khaki and climbing on and off open safari vehicles like a pro as you learn that the real wilderness is nothing like anything you've seen on BBC Earth - it's bigger, better and wilder.

  • Self-drive the beautiful Garden Route

Jump in a hire car and wind your way along one of the most celebrated tourism routes in Africa, wedged between magnificent mountains and the sea as it snakes along a 300km section of South Africa's east coast. This is the Garden Route, so named because of its lush vegetation, wide estuaries and celebrated biodiversity. Eat oysters, drink wine, walk through pristine forests and along deserted beaches (not necessarily in that order) and discover the amazing towns and hamlets that line the route.

  • Visit one of the world's most beautiful cities

Yes. It's Cape Town. Voted the world's most beautiful city more than once and home to an equally iconic mountain that acts as a spectacular backdrop to its bustling streets and vibrant architecture. Table Mountain aside, Cape Town is famous for being the cultural capital of South Africa and has its own, unique laid-back style. With no shortage of wining and dining options, sensational scenery, fabulous shopping and awesome activities, you'll need a few days to explore.

  • Discover the marine Big Five

On terra firma you've got elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion and rhino ruling the roost. Beneath the waves there's a different set of incredible creatures in need of ticking off - whales, sharks, seals, penguins and dolphins. You can see them all along the magnificent Cape Peninsula and Western Cape coastline, depending on the time of year. For whale-watching, head to Hermanus between June and November or climb into a cage to get up close and personal with great white sharks at any time of year. You'll see African penguins on Boulders Beach and seals and dolphins on an ocean safari.

  • Experience biodiversity like nowhere else on Earth

From the Cape Floral Kingdom with its plethora of rare, endemic fynbos plant species to the arid sands of the Kalahari desert and everything in between, South Africa has more biomes and eco-systems than you can throw a rock at. This makes it one of the most biodiverse countries in the world and means that one day you'll be walking through forests of tall trees filled with birdsong and the next you'll be surrounded by what looks like a moonscape dotted with random rocks and mean-looking creepy crawlies. Or sitting on a deserted beach. Or ascending breathtaking mountain passes. Or watching elephants cross the road in front of you...

  • Immerse yourself in vibrant culture

Part of the South African safari experience lays in the incredible people you'll meet along the way. With 11 official languages (don't worry, you don't need to be a polyglot to get by because English is fine) and a rich, tribal history, there's more than enough heritage to satisfy the most discerning culture vulture. Sample the sensations of Soweto, visit township shebeens and eat like a local at the shisanyama, revel in the hip and trendy art and music scene and get with the swing of things in trendy Maboneng... We'll get you where you need to go...
