KENYA

Where safari's incredible journey began...

In the beginning was Kenya... It's where the whole thing started - the traditional home of what we now know as safari, a humble Swahili word that means "journey". It's the country that gave us "Out of Africa", fetching safari outfits and khaki fever and that continues to reign as one of Africa's best safari destinations.

Kenya is synonymous with the word "great". You have the Masai Mara and the spectacular Great Migration that sees around a million wildebeest cross the Mara River in search of fresh grazing. You have the Great Rift Valley where two of the planet's tectonic plates diverge and mountains are torn asunder. And you have the Great Lakes where flamingos explode in clouds of perfect pink.

It's where you get sensational views of Africa's highest mountain - the iconic Kilimanjaro - even though it's located in neighbouring Tanzania! It's simply irrestistible to any self-respecting safari addict with its incredible landscapes, phenomenal wildlife and wonderful people offering rich cultural encounters.

To top it off, Kenya's beautiful Indian Ocean coastline has some of the most picture-perfect white sand beaches and thriving coral reefs in Africa, meaning that you can effortlessly combine the bush and the beach in one seriously sensual safari!

Best times to visit

Things to do

  • The Great Migration in the Masai Mara

It's hard not to hear Sir David Attenborough's voice in your ears when you're sitting on the banks of the Mara River watching thousands of wildebeest leap into the roiling, turbid, croc-infested waters... Dubbed the "greatest show on Earth" there really isn't anything else like it anywhere else in the world, let alone in Africa!

The best time to see the wildebeest in the Masai Mara is generally between July and October each year when they move out of the Serengeti and across the Mara River to fresh grazing, moving back southwards with the rains.

  • Relax on some of Africa’s most pristine beaches

When it comes to Kenya's beautiful coastline, life really is a beach... Lots of beaches, in fact. Whether it's Malindi, Diani, Nyali, Watamu, Turtle Bay or Bamburi, these idyllic stretches of powder-soft, white sand fringed by swaying palms and crystal-clear turquoise waters are the absolute bomb.

You'll find everything here from some of the best beach resorts in the world to Robinson Crusoe-style bungalows on the sand and plush private villas with hot and cold running butler service. Your wish is our command!

  • Watch thousands of pink flamingos on Lake Nakuru

Strangely, flamingos are actually white. Their plumage turns pink thanks to the millions of tiny little brine shrimp they eat along with microscopic algae containing carotenoids - the stuff that makes carrots orange! So as the flamingos metabolise the carotenoid pigment, their feathers turn pink.

The brine shrimp proliferate in many of Kenya's Great Lakes, but the alkaline Lake Nakuru is the champion when it comes to hosting huge flocks of these stately birds because the alkalinity of the water produces more algae! Who said science was boring? We think it rocks!

  • Track black rhino on foot

Head to the wild and woolly north of Kenya for a conservation-based wildlife experience par excellence as you track black rhino on foot with local Samburu guides.

Walking in the wilderness connects you directly to nature and redefines your understanding of your place in the greater order of things. And encountering this magnificent animal in its natural habitat, observing it at close quarters, is literally the thrill of a lifetime.

  • Experience rich culture

People... People who meet people... Masai, Kikuyu, Samburu, Meru, Luhya, Embu, Turkana... Kenya is blessed with a diverse tribal culture and rich history that permeates across its society. The Kikuyu are the most numerous of Kenya's people, followed by the Luhya. While the Masai are undoubtedly the most globally recognised Kenyan tribe, the form less than 0,7% of Kenya's population.

Wherever you go, and irrespective which tribe the people you meet come from, you are guaranteed wonderful interactions and experiences as you learn more about their fascinating traditions.

  • Take to the skies in a biplane

Get your Biggles vibe on as you grab goggles, scarf and fur-lined jacket and climb into the rear seat of a vintage biplane to view Kenya from an entirely different perspective. Feel free to go all Robert Redford and Meryl Streep on us if you like, because flying over this incredible country's breathtaking landscapes in an open air plane is going to blow your mind...
